You have been talking about the FUTURE…

It is an interesting notion isn’t it…

We talk about, obsess about, get concerned about, have anxiety about, build anticipation about…. This thing called the future which
1. doesn’t’ exist and
2. we have no control over whatsoever

So how and where does the future exist?

In THE NARRATIVES IN OUR MINDS THAT WE MAKE UP…

I want you to think about great narrative shifts

Abraham…go till I tell you to stop.
Noah…build a boat the size of a rugby field with no rain in the forecast
Moses… enter into high level international negotiations

Each one of these could be called transformations of sorts….their narratives, personal stories…their lives were on a trajectory, and therefore there was what was perceived by them to be a predictable or relatively known future and all that changed.

We like the idea and feelings of safety and predictability. We like our routines and our rhythms. But as we head into the future there are many unknowns. Our jobs, financial situations, relationships are all open to challenge and change.

LUKE 5:1-11
Jesus invited the disciples to throw their nets in the deep waters (Luke 5). They were used to shallow water fishing where they could see the fish and net them. Even after an unsuccessful night of fishing Jesus told them to head out into the deep water.

This is Jesus’ invitation to you and me. To head into the deep waters. Unknown waters, waters where we can’t touch the bottom of the ocean, deep waters so deep we can’t clearly see what is around us.

The future has unknown dimensions which is why trust becomes so important. If everything was certain there would be no need to trust or have faith.

This means several things to our own self understanding.

Jesus invited them to strike out into the deep but in doing so the result was he invited them into a new narrative. A new way of framing their lives.

1. What Jesus invited was came on the heels of them doing things their way

2. What Jesus invited was counterintuitive…it was the opposite of what they were used to.

3. What Jesus invited went against their expert knowledge and what they “knew to be true”

4. What Jesus invited seemed risky, scary, and uncertain

5. What Jesus invited was much more than was initially expected….he was changing the very narrative of their lives.

So questions…

What can we do to loosen our illusion that we know the future?

What can we do to be open to the possibilities that might come our way?

How can we help each other as a community?

How can we help those around us with hope?

It just feels as if trust in God is a general thing..but I tend to see it as having diffirent aspects/departments ie. Trust for provision, trust for safety, trust for whatever..

So for me it is difficult to understand what Jesus does when he sends them out to deep waters an they catch 2 boatloads full of fish, and then when they reach the land they leave everything??? So did Jesus let them catch all the fish to show them that he is powerful or wise or that he will/can provide if needed, or that they can trust him because he knows better?? And WHAT ABOUT THE FISH?? Jesus leads them to get something that they want yet he doesn't give it to them?? They leave that behind??
It's as if he let's them trust him for a certain aspect yet they leave that and trust him in general..how does that work?? I struggle to get that..

WHAT ABOUT THE FISH??

Why get something you never use again??
